Bimetallic Steam Trap

From the historical point of view, the bithermostatic steam trap (Bitherm patent) has been the most recent and cutting-edge design brought into the market, providing the basis for intelligent steam traps.

It has a balanced pressure valve, whose needle is placed in the low speed flow area, what reduces erosion and extends its life reducing maintenance costs. It has an external adjustment mechanism, which allows adjusting the condensate discharge temperature while the trap is running, thus the user can easily modify the conditions of condensate evacuation or customizes the steam trap without interrupting the steam service. It also includes strainer and connector for monitoring system.

It also facilitates and increases the energy efficiency of steam and condensate networks as well as reduces GHG emissions. This cutting edge technology has given to conventional traps, and valves, intelligence to become smart devices. It was designed taking into consideration performances such as high scalability and availability, and allow new sensors being installed in the coming future by using the same infrastructure.

This innovative system has been developed and patented by BiTherm, and can integrate up to 4 different sensors: ultrasound, temperature, pressure and presence of toxic and explosive gases. Magnus

This is a family of thermostatic-thermodynamic bimetallic steam traps specially designed for very high flow capacities. The steam trap is composed by a variable number of bimetallic elements inbuilt in the body that allows each steam trap to be tailored to any user particular needs.

Among their interesting characteristics can be highlighted its robustness, long lasting life, high energy efficiency, robust, adjustable discharge temperature and low maintenance cost.

Wired Architecture

This is the most powerful monitoring architecture due to the following aspects:

Complete monitoring of steam traps including the three characteristic parameters, which affect steam traps operation (Ultrasound, Temperature, and Backpressure). Wireless only includes Ultrasound and Temperature due to battery life.

Reduced installation costs: up to 64 monitored elements linked to the same cable, which includes power supply and data transmissions.

Reliability: Interferences free (piping, structures, obstacles, buildings, etc).

Sample collection: Sampling rate is not limited by battery life (real time).

Reduction of maintenance cost: Neither replacement of batteries nor maintenance of radio transmitters.

Easy commissioning: High qualified wireless staff is not required.

Main Applications

Monitoring of large number of elements

Huge amount or high density population of elements to be monitored; e.g. refineries or petrochemical plants where there are hundreds or thousands of steam traps per plant.

High sampling rate

Such as safety applications; e.g. monitoring of PRV which handle toxic or explosive gases.

Avoid interference

Monitoring of elements near the ground or surrounded by lots of piping or metallic structures that could interfere wireless transmissions.

Monitoring toxic or explosive gases

Using the same system, i.e. integration of energy saving and safety applications.

Wireless Architecture

This option requires considering the following design aspects:

Partial monitoring of steam traps: It only includes two parameters (Ultrasound, Temperature) due to battery life.

Installation costs: Besides one wireless transmitter per element, wired Access Points need to be considered (It is important to highlight that wireless architectures are based on access points, which require to be powered by wire and optical fiber for data transmission).

Reliability: Study of environment (piping, structures, obstacles, buildings, etc).

Sample collection: Sampling rate affects battery life.

Maintenance cost: Replacement of batteries and maintenance of radio transmitters to be considered.

Commissioning: High qualified wireless staff is required.

BiTherm trap valve station, TVS, offers an inlet isolation piston valve, outlet isolation piston valve, by-pass valve, testing valve, universal flange for connecting any kind of steam trap and the SmartWatch connection, all merged in a single body.

One of the main advantages is that constitutes a very compact design, reducing installation space, saving welds, and allow replacing steam traps in a very easy way.

Steam and Condensate Manifolds

In large industries using steam, long distribution lines for steam and condensate service provide a constant source of maintenance hazards and energy wastage through numerous leakages.

BiTherm steam manifolds are designed to solve such typical problems (vertical installation). Fabricated headers to supply steam, or collect condensate, avoiding sources of leakage. Moreover, this also impulses the aesthetics of a well-designed plant; and eliminates continuous monetary losses due to energy wastage.

BiTherm steam and condensate manifolds are made from forged steel to suit various operating conditions. These are available in configurations of 4, 8 or 12 ways. Integral piston valves of seatless design will ensure that leakages across seat are eliminated totally.

  • The valve stem and sealing surfaces are protected from dirt.
  • Piston sliding, without turns, between the rings preventing dirt from damaging the sealing surfaces, ensuring long duration.
